The Copywriting Process: How Does it Work?

Following on from last week’s blog about finding a good copywriter, we thought we’d shed some light on the copywriting process and how it all works here at To Your Heart’s Content.

If you’re new to the world of outsourced copywriting or have not worked with our team before, these are some of the questions we’re often asked by new clients about our copywriting process to get you up to speed.

What can you write?

Since 2013, we’ve helped hundreds of businesses, from startups to household names, write the copy they need to build a brand and sell their goods and services online. That includes:

  • Website pages (home, about, service pages, location-specific pages)
  • Landing pages
  • Blog posts
  • Company news articles
  • Guest posts
  • White papers
  • Downloadable PDFs
  • Newsletters
  • Marketing emails
  • How-to guides
  • Press releases
  • Infographics
  • Product descriptions
  • Brochures
  • Meta tags
  • And much more

So, whatever copywriting assistance you need, you can be pretty sure we can help.

How do you work?

All the copy we produce is written by the two of us – here we are, look. In the past, we’ve tried using other freelancers, but we’ve never been consistently satisfied with the work they’ve produced, so we now keep everything in-house. That keeps the standard high and helps to avoid awkward conversations with other writers.

We each have our niches, so while Holly is our go-to fashion, food and digital marketing specialist, I’m more at home with finance, sport, recruitment, and the like – not that we gender stereotype here at TYHC. Although we have our specialisms, we welcome clients from all industries and have produced copy for everything from fertility clinics to international schools in the UAE.

Take a look at our copywriting portfolio for examples of a few of the clients we’ve worked with in the past.

What are the first steps in the copywriting process?

Just get in touch and tell us about your project and we’ll send you a free, no-obligation quote. If you’re happy with the quote, we’ll mine you for information about your business, either by sending you a questionnaire or scheduling a call. You can also send us style guides, competitor information, USPs, etc. via email, so we have everything we need to get your copy bang on the money.

What information do we need to send you a quote?

The more information you can provide, the better. We need to know the type of content you’re looking for – webpages, on-site/offsite blogs, white papers, etc., the quantity and a rough idea of the word count (we can provide recommendations if you’re unsure).

Our turnaround times are quick, usually within 1-2 weeks depending on the size of the project, but if you’d like the work completed urgently, please let us know.

How much do you charge?

Take a look at our copywriting rates and we think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. We’ll provide you with a flat rate quote for the project (unless an hourly rate is more appropriate given the nature of the work). The price will include unlimited edits so you’ll always be delighted with your shiny new copy.

Our rates compare favourably with many other professional copywriters and that’s no reflection on the quality of our work.

Can we meet?

We’d love to! We’re both socially awkward but that’s part of the fun. We’re based in central London but we’re happy to travel further afield and even work on-site for larger projects.

How do you know what to write?

Good question. You’re the experts in your industry, so we’ll pick your brains, research your competitors, discuss your USPs, get to know your brand and ask as many questions as we can to get into your target audience’s heads.

Sometimes, coming to an industry fresh can be beneficial, as it allows us to identify areas you might have overlooked or information that’s crucial to customers in the early stages of their buying journey that you’ve not provided.

Can you help me find the SEO keywords and phrases my customers are using?

Absolutely. We can perform keyword research to reveal the search volume and the level of competition for the keywords and phrases people are using to find your products and services. We’ll then distribute those terms across your website pages accordingly to increase your visibility for relevant searches.

What I will receive?

You’ll receive either a Word doc or a Google doc (whichever you prefer) by email that will include the body copy, optimised headings and subheadings, meta tags, hyperlinks and high-quality images (with alt tags) that can be used for commercial purposes (if requested).

Can I request edits?

You can request as many edits as necessary to create a finished product you’re delighted with. Almost every client we’ve worked with in the past seven years has been really happy with our content when it has arrived in their inbox. However, if you think something needs to be tweaked, please don’t be afraid to ask.
